Legends of Gath #57; The Sword of Goliath

The Angel of the LORD was rolling straight 20s that night.

I can't find any reference to David keeping Goliath's sword after he used it to chop off the Philistine's head, but I like to think he did.

REDACTED On a final note, I need to refrain from using the term "mutant." I never intended the living residents of Gath to be radiated mutants, but I accidentally used the term and it got stuck in my head. Oops.

On a  final, final note, using a melee weapon instead of a gun in Gath yields 2x the xps for a kill. It's what Denzel Washington would want.

  1. I enjoyed the ambiguity as to what happened in Gath and wether it was biblically literal or more metaphorical. Maybe it was a literal hand of god descending from clouds to smite them, or maybe it was nuclear bombs, or maybe it was some other weird future event. So from that perspective I didn't think Mutant = Eradiated was guaranteed -- only that *something* had happened and they were now mutants. Filthy slathering mutants.

    1. Very strong comment! I redacted my statement in the blog post. You are right. Mutants, degenerates, slobbering maniacs...it all works and speaks to a general fallen state. Many thanks for the input.

    2. You also bring up a point that I had forgotten. When I originally rolled out the setting, I had in mind something from World of Darkness, werewolves specifically. When a human saw a werewolf transform, they would basically experience cognitive dissonance and their brain would create something to replace what they really saw. "Oh my God did you see the size of that rabid great dane? Or maybe it was a pony?"

I had this idea that in Gath the magic, mayhem, mutants and angelic slaughter would be open to interpretation. On the surface Poppy was kind of silly, but she was also beautiful...and alien, which is how some people might perceive divine beings. I liked the idea how Rowan - your character - sort of filled in the blanks with his own interpretation of how events unfolded. One of your henchmen was a cop from LA, but he reimagined himself and reality entirely. It was a clumsy attempt on my part, but there was /something/ there that had value.

Continuing with that idea, if QAnon has such wide - and delusional - support why would residents of a post biblical apocalypse also not see the landscape in very unique and personal perspectives? Thanks for the input. You have given me a lot to think about. :)

    3. One of the fun things about Gath was the Barsoom like quality where characters would find themselves adventuring there from different places. Our little band mixed fantasy and modern background elements with the Sci-Fi / post-apoc setting they were exploring. Were they transported there bodily, through astral projection, or perhaps it was purgatory.

Poppy was weird and silly, but added to the surreal quality. At the end of our mini-campaign she gave the option of staying in Gath or going someplace else which tied it back to that surreal Barsoom element. That was my favourite encounter with an extra planar / deity type NPC in a game. Unlike something more defined with stats and limits I wasn't entirely sure what was going on or the scope of what could happen next.

  2. People still believe the world is flat...just saying. Love the post and approve of the update to include "mutants".
