Legends of Gath #29; Jonah the Fisherman

I have a certain distrust of the whole concept of "metaplot," but the renewal of the land and the return of the sea is a thematic element I'd like to explore.

  1. The fact that Jonah has skulls littering his front yard gives me pause.

I wonder if the rumors of a floating raft or ship seen only at night are connected to Jonah. Perhaps Jonah has enabled his boat to float through the sea of air and he goes trolling for a catch, sometimes bringing home something a little larger than a fish for the flames in the hearth.

    1. I think the skulls are there to remind him that he, too, is mortal and will eventually fall to the ravages of time. I'm getting a "ghost riders in the sky" vibe from your comment. "Ghost fishies in the sky!"

  2. Where do Jonah journey into the wastelands from? There are purestrain humans in orbital stations, but are there still walled cities outside the blasted deserts of Gath?

    1. If I understand correctly, the non-gibbering Gath residents are in orbital colonies and on lunar bases where they kneel before images of Malcom Gladwell and Neil deGrasse Tyson. Then, of course, there are the gibbering mutants of Gath, forever cursed to atone for their worship of false gods. Finally, there are the pure strain humans who probably ventured in from Salt Lake City. Some of the other pure strain humans are just those weird desert wanderers from Arizona that litter the desert landscape. Or something like that.

    2. To quote God from south park, "Mormon. The correct answer was Mormon."

  3. "And the Great Imbiber will slake the thirst of those who sing their songs and to those who tell their tales."

I approached Jonah with a full wine flask and ask him to describe this sea he speaks of. This wonderful myth of endless water full of endless living things. He tells me, and his words carry me to the sea. The rolling waves going from blue to white as the waves curl upon themselves. The steady sound of water moving across the ground and playing within the rocks. I smelled the salt. I felt the coolness of mist. Jonah spun his words with mastery. And as he finished his tale, I felt a single drop of what he called rain, fall from the sky and land upon my arm. We both saw this small drop splashed across my arm. "The Great Imbiber has blessed us today. A divine favor to show us such a wonder."
