Hex By Hex

As I inch forward in the creation of my hex crawl, I have to constantly remind myself to keep the focus tight, to not dwell on anything beyond the horizon. It's so easy for me to get mired in the creation of details that will never be used in play.

  1. Christian - I got my Loviatars in the mail yesterday, so I've had a chance to read through them. It's a very cool zine, and the Hex Crawls rock!

    1. I am so glad that they arrived so quickly! I am glad you like the zine. It's definitely a throw back. :) I have been kicking around the idea of a coastal hex crawl when 5e comes out or even doing it with 1e. It's about time I do something with the ocean, you know?

      Have a great day!

  2. Hex crawls do that to you. We are always asking, what's over there? What's next? Where could this lead to? It goes against our grain to not wonder.

  3. Oh, and I am very much looking forward to the next Loviatar. Hoping when I go to the mail today its there! And if I don't renew my script tonight email me and demand I do so.

  4. O.o Shiny! A question, if you please, and if it's not a craft secret: Where, pray tell, can I find those brilliant map templates?

  5. When I get home I can send you the .pdf. I like the paper because it has a bunch of smaller hexes within. I have decided that each large hex is 10 kilometers, so each smaller hex is 1,000 meters. I think it's a managable scale. :)

  6. Thanks, man, that'd be awesome. You have my address, yeah?

I've been marinating a bit on the question of hex scale recently. The map template I used for the Langrim islands gives each hex a size of 25 miles across. It makes for fairly large area, and while one cannot "explore" it in a day, it can be crossed on foot with relative ease.

I plan on setting up a table giving travel speed according to terrain - I know, old school gaming leads to tables ;)

  7. Hey Christian,

Do you think you could hook me up with that pdf as well? I really like the hexes within hexes.

  9. Christian - if I may add one more person to the list, would you mind hitting me up with that hex template: gvaughn1@gmail.com

  10. I'm also interested in that hex template. faoladh at gmail.

Also looking forward to Loviatar 7, which hasn't arrived yet. It's one of three things I am expecting in the mail (the others are an order of books from Lulu and a DVD from an Amazon third-party seller), and the suspense is delicious.

    1. Nice! I mailed your copy on Saturday, so let me know if it doesn't arrive by Wednesday (although it should be there tomorrow).

  11. Thanks for #7; still working through #6. It seems like every time I start, I get handed a new to-do list from my wife. Want to finish that up, obviously, before going to #7.
And while you're making that e-mail list, I'd like to be added on there as well, if you don't mind.
